$18,220 RAISED FOR DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED BY K OF C
WITH ORITANI CHARITABLE FOUNDATION MATCHING GRANT
Township of
Washington, NJ, 9 –
The Annual
Fund Drive, April30-May 1, run by Mother Seton Council #5427 of the Knights of
Columbus raised $9,110 to aid developmentally disabled children and adults.
Donations were collected from car to car by Brother Knights. Drivers and
passengers at the intersections of Pascack Road and Washington Ave (near Seasons
Restaurant) and Pascack Road and Ridgewood Road (near Bacari Grill) were
particularly generous, gracious, and patient. Shoppers at the Washington Town
Center responded in similar fashion.

A special
thank you also goes to Brother Knight Kevin Lynch, Oritani Savings Bank CEO, for
the very generous matching grant from the Oritani Charitable Foundation, which
meant a doubling of the funds raised.
It has been
the tradition of Mother Seton Council to use the donations collected to give
back to the local communities from where it came. This year the money raised
will be given to the following: The Felician School for Exceptional Children,
ARC of Bergen County, New Concept for Living, Spectrum for Living, Catholic
Community Services, and the New Jersey Special Olympics.

K OF C DONATES $7090.00 TO LOCAL CHARITIES
Township of Washington, NJ, February 9 – Mother Seton Council #5427 of the
Knights of Columbus in the Township of Washington gave $7,090 to two local
charities on January 27, 2011. Accepting a check for $5,590 was Heather
Maloney, representing Hopes and Heroes, a foundation dedicated to children’s
cancer research and support of
its
victims while undergoing treatment. Brianna Commerford, 13, a cancer
survivor, spoke of her ordeal as did her parents. Another group, Operation
Goody Bag, accepted a $1,500 donation to help provide paper sacks of candy,
snacks and well-wishes to be distributed to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Started by a retired Paramus grade school teacher, Jane Cosco, and assisted by
local students, they have assembled and shipped thousands of the goody bags to
our soldiers. Money to fund these charities was raised through the efforts
of the member Knights at a beefsteak dinner and picnic. The profits of all
K of C fundraisers are donated 100% to the charities they support and all labor
at those affairs is volunteered.

K OF C DONATES TO TEANECK ARMORY FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP
Township of Washington, NJ, October 22 – Knights of Columbus Council #5427
invited representatives of the Teaneck Armory Family Support Group to speak on
September 14 about how their organization assists the families of our troops in
the armed services who are in need.
Sergeants Minnie Hiller and Janis
Shaw and Chief Warrant Officer Stephan Gaunt briefly outlined their nearly 120
years of military service in theaters all over the world. CWO Stephan
Gaunt then spoke on the purpose of this family assistance program.
Families of service personnel not living on a military base often face monetary
hardships and may be in short supply of food for the table. Also eligible
for help are men and women who have had military service, but need a helping
hand. W
hat
branch they served in makes no difference; only a military ID is needed, no
other questions asked. After these brief remarks the Knights of Mother
Seton Council in the Township of Washington presented a $250 check and made a
commitment that this was not the last time assistance would be offered.

HAILSTORM AND FLOOD DAMAGE ORDEAL IS OVER
Township of
Washington, NJ, October 6 –
The
hailstorm of last June did significant damage to area homes. One family in
Washington Township was hit particularly hard. The hail and resulting flood
broke the garage door and flooded the garage and basement. The family car was
totaled, the heating system was lost, and sections of sheetrock had to be
replaced. Unfortunately, insurance did not cover everything. When Mother Seton
Council Knights of Columbus in Washington Township heard of this catastrophe,
one if its members, Shawn Cowie, enlisted the help of his colleagues in the
Pascack Valley Master Plumbers Association to lend a hand in bringing the
damaged home back to normal. The John M. Hartel Company donated a new heating
system and Shawn’s company, Loretto Plumbing, donated other material. Shawn and
fellow plumbers Drew Breitenbach and Tom Myack installed the new heating system.
Other friends and neighbors have also helped with the needed repairs. The family
thanks the Hartel Company, The Knights of Columbus (and Shawn Cowie in
particular), and all the others who so generously donated their time and talent.
